Essay Examples

Essay Examples This is applicable to blogs and web pages, and to a certain extent, in academic writing. When you hit a web page for info, what do you do? If you work at a reasonably sized company, the chances are pretty good that there is at least one other person who is also wondering how to become a better writer. Although writing is typically considered a solitary activity, the best writers know when it’s time to get much-needed feedback on their work. Rephrase your thesis statement in the concluding paragraph, stating how you have proven it through your supporting paragraphs. Thesis statements are typically one or two sentences, located at the end of the introduction paragraph. A strong thesis statement avoids vague language and is specific and provocative. To take easy reading to the next level, try using sub-headers every paragraph to three paragraphs. You can assume commercial writing and news reports will have paragraphs approximately half as long as the ones you’d see in academic or essay writing. In this case, we’re looking at ten to twenty paragraphs per 1,000 words instead of five to ten. Whatever you’re discussing, you’ll discover a number of concepts which you presumably planned before you started writing. To make it all hang together nicely, you add a bit of space when you transition from one area of discussion to another. The University of Maryland University College website says the conclusion should have a summary of the essay's major arguments and an explanation on how they are connected. Also, explain why the topic of your essay is important and why it should matter to the readers. Editing is a tough skill to learn for beginner writers, because they place immense value on the time and effort they put into writing in the first place. However, a lot of writing is actually rewriting, and this is where the cold, hard eye of an editor will serve you well. Just as you probably have a list of blogs you read often, you’ll likely also read the same writers on a regular basis. Identify what it is you enjoy about their work, and see if you can use it to improve your writing skills. As with any rule, there are exceptions, but broadly speaking, essay writing and academic writing calls for paragraphs in the word range. Since there can be a large variation on the number of words needed to fill a page, most papers are no longer assigned by page count. That is, an assignment, essay or paper will likely be assigned as 1500 â€" 2000 words rather than 3 â€" 4 pages. This way it is much more difficult for the writer to “game the system” by using large fonts and excessive spacing to meet the writing criteria. You don’t need to have an unfinished novel hidden away in your desk drawer to join a workshop. These days, content marketing meet-ups and professional development groups are becoming wildly popular. Join one of the many content marketing groups on LinkedIn to meet like-minded writers, or search for writing workshops near you on sites like Meetup. Pick a topic, write something, listen to the feedback of the group, and then revise it. Does a writer you like use humor to spice up dry topics? Do they use pop culture references to make their work entertaining and useful? I look at the header, and then I scan the sub-heads to get an idea of the writer’s approach to the subject. If it looks like fluff, I kill the page and move on. But if the sub-headers are interesting, and seem to tell me there’s something worth learning, I’ll read the whole piece.
